History of the Suncare Community Centre

Suncare has a 35 year history creating community connection at this location. Since 1987, this Centre has provided much needed respite, support, care and meals for the Sunshine Coast community.

In 1970, the Central Sunshine Coast Committee on the Ageing (now Suncare Community Services) was formed with support from the Maroochydore Rotary Club to begin the Maroochydore Meals on Wheels service.

Committed to improving the wellbeing of senior citizens, a  goal to build a Senior Citizens Centre with provisions for activities and respite facilities was set. Land on the corner of George Street and Memorial Avenue Maroochydore, owned by the Maroochydore RSL, Park Trustees and Rotary Club, was relinquished for the purpose of building the Senior Citizens Centre to be built over three stages.

Years of dedicated fundraising and grant applications funded the construction of stage one, including facilities for Meals on Wheels. Fundraising continued for stage two and in 1978 the Maroochydore Community Hall was officially opened.
