Arty & Jim: Reconnected through Suncare after three decades of friendship

There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing customer stories that stay with us long after they’re told. Cue Arty and Jim, whose story of long-term friendship and reconnection, reminds us of why we do what we do.

Arty is shining at 100 years young, and likewise is Jim at 78. Despite the 22 years’ difference between them, the pair have been best mates for over 30 years, first crossing paths while living in the close-knit community of the Cooloola Coast.

Their friendship spans countless family get-togethers, BBQs and catch-ups over a beer (or three!). Just ask Jim’s wife, Di, who says the couple are the best of friends, having been connected for over a quarter of their lives! But in recent years, a decline in each one’s health has meant they can no longer travel to catch up, laugh and reminisce on old times. Social connections can be just as important as physical activity in maintaining our mental wellbeing and physical health. Though Arty and Jim have managed to remain in touch, it hasn’t been quite the same without being able to spend time together in person.

That was, until they each started engaging Suncare for their various needs.

Arty wanted to ensure his life story was never forgotten – he wanted his grandkids, great grandkids and great, great grandkids to read about his life, in his words. So, with the help of Suncare, Arty began writing his autobiography, which naturally included Jim. The two were brought back together, as Jim aided Arty in documenting the shared stories that had helped shape Arty’s life. While the two reflected fondly on their shared past, Suncare staff had the privilege of recording and preserving these stories, putting pen to paper to bring Arty’s autobiography to life.

Both Arty and Jim have continued to engage with Suncare’s clinical care services – including, nursing, social support, physiotherapy and other allied health services – as well as everyday living services which often involves a good old fashioned home-cooked meal.

Excitingly, with Suncare’s support, Jim successfully passed his mobility scooter trial and acquired a scooter, including a 4-wheeled walker attachment, giving him the flexibility to switch seamlessly from riding to walking and opening up more opportunities to get out and about. But perhaps most importantly, it has given Jim back the independence to connect with Arty and for the friends to enjoy each other’s company again, just like they used to.

These days the two are making the most of their renewed independence, catching up in person and enjoying the friendship that has spanned more than three decades.

It’s stories like Arty and Jim’s that remind us why we love getting up and coming to work every day. It’s not “just” a job for us; it's about helping people maintain their independence, preserve meaningful connections and continue living life on their own terms. Witnessing the joy that comes from those moments is why we do what we do.
