What is Allied Health?

Allied health is the name for a group of health professionals who are not doctors or nurses, but who play a big part in keeping you well. Think physiotherapists who help with mobility, occupational therapists who help you stay safe and capable at home, podiatrists who look after your feet, and dietitians who help with food and nutrition.

At Suncare, our allied health team works alongside your GP and the rest of your support team. We focus on what you want to keep doing, then help you build the strength, skills or setup to keep doing it.

How to access allied health services

Most of our customers access allied health through one of these pathways. Your Care Partner can help you work out which one applies to you.

  • Support at Home (SAH) – government-funded support for older people who need help to live independently. Allied health is included across all eight funding levels.
  • Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) – entry-level government-funded support. Some allied health services may attract a small co-payment.
  • Restorative Care – short-term, goal-focused support to help you regain function after illness, injury or hospital stay.
  • Fee-for-service – pay-as-you-go option if you are waiting for funding, want a one-off appointment, or prefer not to go through My Aged Care.

What you can expect to pay

Most allied health services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, dietetics and speech pathology, are classified as clinical care under Support at Home. That means there is no participant contribution. The government covers the full cost.

A small number of therapeutic services, such as osteopathy or chiropractic, sit under the independence category and may attract a contribution depending on your financial situation. Your Care Partner will explain exactly what applies to you before any service starts, so there are no surprises.

If you are paying privately (fee-for-service), our rates are published in our pricing schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What is allied health in aged care?

Allied health is the term for a group of qualified health professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, dietitians and speech pathologists, who work alongside doctors and nurses to help you stay well.

In aged care, allied health focuses on keeping you mobile, safe, well-nourished and independent at home for as long as possible.

Do I need a GP referral?

Not always. If you are using Support at Home or CHSP funding, your Care Partner can arrange allied health services as part of your plan.

If you are using Medicare rebates (such as a Chronic Disease Management Plan), you will need a referral from your GP. Our team can talk you through what applies to you.

Can I have allied health at home?

Yes. Most of our allied health services can be delivered in your own home, which is often the most practical setting for things like balance assessments, equipment recommendations and everyday-task practice.

Group programs and some assessments happen at our Community Hubs.

Does Support at Home cover podiatry?

Yes. Podiatry is included in Support at Home as a clinical care service, with no participant contribution. Your Care Partner can help you book in regular foot care, including nail care, callus treatment and diabetes-related foot health.

How often will I see my allied health professional?

It depends on your goals and the support you have been approved for. Some people see us weekly for a short program after a hospital stay, others see us once a month for ongoing maintenance. We will work with you to find a rhythm that suits your life and your budget.

Can I switch to Suncare from another allied health provider?

Yes. If you already have a Support at Home package with another provider, your funding stays with you, not your provider.

Give us a call on 1800 786 227 and we will walk you through how the switch works. It is more straightforward than most people expect.

Where do you offer allied health in Queensland?

We deliver allied health across South East and Central Queensland, including Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Moreton Bay, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast and Logan.

If you live in or near one of these regions, our team can come to you.

Ready when you are

Whether you are starting fresh or thinking about switching providers, our team can help you work out the right mix of allied health for your life. No pressure, no jargon, just a chat.
