Advocacy and Supported Decision Making

Everyone has the right to make their own choices. Advocates and registered supporters can help you understand information and have your say.

What Is Advocacy?

An  advocate is an independent person who helps you understand your rights, make decisions and resolve any concerns about your care.
They can assist with things like:

Understanding services and fees

Speaking with Suncare on your behalf (with your permission)
Helping to resolve complaints
Supporting you to speak up confidently
Free, confidential advocacy is available through the  Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN)
(1800 700 600)    or visit www.opan.org.au

Supported Decision‑Making

  • Supported decision‑making is about helping you stay in control of your own choices — even if you need some guidance to understand or communicate them.
From 1 November 2025, the new Aged Care Act introduces **Registered Supporters**. These are trusted people you choose — such as a friend, family member or carer — who can help you:
  • Understand your options and preferences
  • Access and share information
  • Communicate your decisions
  • A Registered Supporter must always act honestly, carefully and in good faith, following your wishes and preferences.

How to Register a Supporter

You can nominate or change a supporter by contacting My Aged Care (1800 200 422) or talking with your assessor.

You can also choose to have informal supporters without registering them officially.
