Training and Qualifications for Aged Care Providers

Ongoing training is key to quality care. Explore the essential training and qualifications your staff need to meet Suncare and legislative standards.

Delivering safe, high-quality care starts with a well-trained and qualified workforce. As an Associated Provider, you are responsible for ensuring that everyone who delivers services on behalf of Suncare is properly trained, competent, and up to date with the latest requirements.

Training Requirements:
All staff must complete training in the following areas:

  • The Statement of Rights and how to uphold them in daily practice
  • The Aged Care Code of Conduct and its application
  • The Aged Care Act and any relevant legislative changes
  • The Strengthened Quality Standards
  • Cultural safety and diversity awareness, to ensure inclusive care for all
  • Trauma-informed care, recognising and responding to the effects of trauma
  • Complaints and feedback management, including escalation procedures
  • Incident recognition, reporting, and response
  • Whistleblower protections and how to escalate disclosures
  • Privacy and information management, including data security
  • Infection prevention and control
  • Behaviour support and elder abuse prevention
  • Work health and safety, including hazard identification and safe work procedures
  • Emergency response and disaster preparedness

Training must be provided at least annually, when a new staff member joins, or when there are changes to the system or a person’s role. Keep detailed records of all training completed and be prepared to provide evidence to Suncare or regulators if requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Domestic Assistants: Relevant experience or Certificate II in Community Services (or equivalent)
  • Personal Care Workers: Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community) or equivalent, plus current First Aid and CPR certification
  • Enrolled and Registered Nurses: Current AHPRA registration, First Aid and CPR certification
  • Drivers: Valid driver’s licence, National Police Check, and a safe driving record
  • Allied Health Professionals: Relevant tertiary qualification and current professional registration
  • Chefs/Food Service Staff: Certificate III in Commercial Cookery or equivalent, and Food Safety Supervisor certification

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s https://www.agedcarequality.gov.au/providers/education-training/online-learning-alis/online-learning-provider-and-associated-provider-registration is available for Associated Providers to register and complete relevant training modules. You may also need to provide additional organisation-specific training as required.
