The Statement of Rights in Aged Care

Every older person deserves respect, dignity, and choice. This article explains the Statement of Rights and how you can uphold them in your work.

The Statement of Rights is a cornerstone of the Aged Care Act 2024. It sets out the fundamental rights of older people receiving care, ensuring they are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Key rights include:

  • The right to independence, autonomy, and freedom of choice
  • The right to equitable access to quality and safe services
  • The right to privacy and protection of personal information
  • The right to person-centred communication and the ability to raise issues without fear of reprisal
  • The right to advocacy, support, and social connections

Your responsibilities as a provider:

  • Act in line with the Statement of Rights: Make sure your services and interactions always respect these rights.
  • Train your staff: Ensure everyone understands the Statement of Rights and how to uphold them in their work.
  • Keep records: Document staff training and any actions taken to support these rights.
  • Report concerns: If you see or suspect a breach of these rights, report it to Suncare immediately.

By embedding the Statement of Rights into your daily practice, you help create a culture where older people feel valued, heard, and empowered.
