Keeping your skin healthy in Queensland’s hot weather

Queensland’s hot, humid weather can be hard on anyone’s skin. As we get older, our skin naturally becomes a little more sensitive, which means heat and moisture can lead to irritation more easily.

Common skin problems in warmer weather

There are several common skin problems that tend to appear in the warmer months, particularly in areas where skin folds or rubs. These may include:

  • Heat rash (prickly heat): small red, itchy bumps
  • Chafing: red, sore skin where areas rub together
  • Fungal rashes: sore, red patches in warm, moist areas
  • Excoriation: raw or broken skin from rubbing or scratching
  • Incontinence-related dermatitis: sore skin from urine or stool contact
  • Folliculitis: small red bumps around hair roots
  • Dry skin: rough, flaky or itchy skin

Broken or very irritated skin can become infected, so early care is important.

How to protect your skin in hot weather

There are plenty of small daily steps you can take to maintain your skin health. These simple habits can make a big difference. Remember to:

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and a soap-free cleanser. Pat skin dry - don’t rub it.
  • Moisturise every day, even in summer, to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing. Cotton is best!
  • Choose breathable underwear. Cotton or bamboo can help keep skin cooler and drier.
  • Change continence pads often if you experience incontinence.
  • Use a thin barrier cream if your skin is often sore, raw, prone to irritation or exposed to moisture.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Keep cool at home with fans or air-conditioning when you can.
  • Let skin air out by creating airflow and avoiding tight or heavy clothing when possible.
