Suncare members proudly joined the Nandjimadji Art Group and Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (OACRA) for an exciting day on Lake Kawana, Sunshine Coast, at the National Sprint Titles on 3 February 2017.
AOCRA President Mark Forbes approached the Nandjimadji group to participate in the annual event to showcase the canoe which was painted last year by art group members and launched internationally.
Our Nandjimadji Art Group was invited to launch the event, with a Welcome to Country by Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers starting off proceedings. Aunty Robyn Lennox then performed a ceremonial blessing to officially begin the event, which showcased the Nandjimadji canoe – a magnificent spectacle as it cruised along the flat water at Lake Kawana.
Nandjimadji artist Tracey Nicholson rode in the canoe with Aunty Robyn, one of the founding Elders and feature artists of the Nandjimadji Art Group and Yarning Circle, along with Suncare Care Worker Karen Vines.
Spectators included Fiona Simpson MP and Jarrod Bleijie MP, Christina Fletcher, Carer Support Project Coordinator, and our newest Suncare team member, Business Development Manager Rob Cross.
